An intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Ripple Recovery Center typically lasts 6 to 12 weeks. Most clients attend between 9 and 15 hours of programming per week, spread across three to five days, with morning and evening sessions available at both our Barrington and Cherry Hill locations in Camden County, NJ. The exact length depends on your progress, and many people step down to our outpatient program (OP) when IOP ends rather than stopping treatment altogether.
This article explains what sets the timeline, what a shorter or longer IOP looks like, and what happens when it ends.

What decides how long IOP lasts?
IOP is not a fixed course. Your clinical team sets an initial plan at your assessment and adjusts it as you go. A few things move the timeline:
- Where you started. People stepping down from PHP have already built a foundation and often move through IOP faster. People starting at IOP directly tend to use the full range.
- Stability outside of sessions. A stable home, a job, and a support system make it easier to practice recovery skills between sessions, which shortens the time it takes to be ready for step-down.
- Co-occurring conditions. When anxiety, depression, or trauma are part of the picture, the team may keep you in IOP a little longer so both conditions get addressed together. Our guide to dual diagnosis care explains why.
- Your own goals. IOP is collaborative. If you want more time, or feel ready sooner, that conversation shapes the plan.
What does a 6-week IOP look like versus a 12-week IOP?
| Length | Typical fit | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 weeks | Stepping down from PHP, stable housing and work, strong support at home | Focus on relapse prevention and rebuilding routines, then step down to OP |
| 8 to 10 weeks | Starting at IOP directly, moderate needs | Time to work on underlying patterns in individual and group therapy before stepping down |
| 10 to 12 weeks or more | Co-occurring conditions, earlier relapse, or a home environment that needs more support | Extended clinical work, family sessions, and case management before OP |
None of these are rules. They are patterns the clinical team sees most often.
How many hours a week is IOP?
At Ripple, most clients attend between 9 and 15 hours per week. That usually breaks down into group therapy three to five days a week, individual counseling, family sessions when they help, and relapse prevention work. Sessions are offered in the morning and the evening, which is why many people keep working during IOP. Our article on keeping your job during outpatient treatment covers the details.
What happens when IOP ends?
For most people, IOP ends by stepping down, not by stopping. The next level is our outpatient program (OP), usually one or two sessions a week for several months. OP keeps the clinical relationship going while you spend more of your week living recovery instead of attending it.
If you finish IOP and find you need more support, you can move back up. Some people return to IOP after a period in OP, and some go up to PHP. Moving between levels is the continuum working as designed.
Can IOP be shorter if I have already done treatment before?
Sometimes. Prior treatment means you already know the tools, and the assessment takes that into account. What matters more than history is where you are now: how stable your life is, what you are using, and what support you have. Someone with three prior programs and an unstable home may need the full 12 weeks. Someone in their first program with strong support may be ready for OP in six.

Does insurance limit how long IOP lasts?
Insurance plans authorize IOP in blocks, and the clinical team requests continued authorization as treatment progresses. Ripple works with many major insurance plans and handles this for you. What your plan covers depends on the plan, so verify your insurance before you start and you will know what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
How long does IOP last on average?
At Ripple, IOP typically lasts 6 to 12 weeks, with most clients attending 9 to 15 hours per week. Length depends on progress, so the plan adjusts as you go.
Is IOP shorter than PHP?
Usually, IOP is longer in weeks but lighter in hours. PHP typically runs 2 to 6 weeks at 6 hours a day. IOP runs 6 to 12 weeks at a few hours a day, three to five days a week.
Can I finish IOP early?
If your clinical team agrees you are ready, yes. Early completion usually means stepping down to OP rather than leaving treatment entirely.
What if I need longer than 12 weeks?
Then you stay longer. The 12-week figure is typical, not a cap. The team reviews progress regularly and extends the plan when it helps.
Do I have to attend every day?
No. Most clients attend three to five days a week. Morning and evening sessions are available so IOP can fit around work, school, or family.
