Partial hospitalization · Barrington and Cherry Hill, NJ

Partial hospitalization program (PHP) for addiction in South Jersey

Ripple's partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the most structured level of outpatient addiction treatment we offer. You spend most of the day in treatment, several days a week, and go home every evening. There are no overnight stays. PHP runs at both of our Camden County locations, in Barrington and Cherry Hill.

Who PHP is for

Is PHP the right level of care?

A clinical assessment decides, but PHP is often a fit when:

  • You have just finished a medical detox and need daily structure while early recovery is fragile.
  • Weekly therapy or IOP has not been enough to stop using.
  • Anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms are making daily life hard alongside substance use. Learn more about our co-occurring disorders treatment.
  • You have a safe, stable place to sleep, at home or in recovery housing.

When PHP is not enough. If you need medical withdrawal management, 24-hour supervision, or you are not safe right now, PHP is not the right first step. We will help you find the right level of care. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911. If you are coming off a benzodiazepine, PHP can run alongside the taper your prescriber sets; our article on what a safe benzodiazepine taper looks like explains how the two fit together.

What PHP includes

What a PHP day includes

Each day combines several kinds of care. Your clinical team builds your plan around your goals.

Therapy

Individual therapy

One-on-one sessions with a licensed clinician to work on your goals and what is driving your substance use.

Groups

Group sessions

Groups that build connection and accountability, using CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed approaches.

Medical

Medication management and MAT

Medication support and mental health care. Physicians at both locations provide medication-assisted treatment.

Skills

Relapse prevention and life skills

Coping strategies for cravings and stress, and practical skills for daily routines.

Support

Case management

Help with housing, legal, and community resources so practical problems do not derail treatment.

Family

Family therapy

Sessions that help families understand what is happening and how to support recovery.

Medical care

Medication and mental health support in PHP

PHP includes medication management and mental health support. For opioid use disorder, medication is a recommended part of treatment, and both of our locations have physicians who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Whether medication fits your plan is a decision you make with our medical team. Read how MAT works at Ripple.

If you also live with anxiety, depression, or trauma, your plan addresses those alongside substance use. See what dual diagnosis means.

Length and next steps

How long PHP lasts, and what comes after

PHP is not a fixed course. Your team sets the length based on your progress and reviews it as you go. Most people spend a few weeks in PHP, then step down to IOP and later to OP, so support continues as they return to work and daily life. If things get harder, you can move back up. Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a partial hospitalization program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured outpatient level of addiction treatment. You spend most of the day in treatment, several days a week, and go home each evening. Despite the name, there is no hospital stay.

Do I stay overnight in PHP?

No. PHP at Ripple is outpatient. You go home, or to your recovery housing, every evening.

How long does PHP last?

It depends on your progress. Most people spend a few weeks in PHP before stepping down to IOP. Your clinical team reviews your plan as you go.

Do I need detox before PHP?

Not always. It depends on what you use and your assessment. If you need medical withdrawal management first, we help arrange detox placement and plan your start in PHP.

Can I work while in PHP?

PHP takes most of the day, so most people take time off. Many people return to work once they step down to IOP, which offers morning and evening options.

Is PHP offered at both locations?

Yes. PHP runs at our Barrington and Cherry Hill locations.
